Santonio Holmes to Redskins Or Jets?

With the Lockout ending, teams are wasting no time making moves and finding the right pieces to get them to the Superbowl next season.

Ravens hit the heart of Baltimore and football souls all over when they announced that they would be releasing Willis Mcgahee, along with veterans Todd Heap, Derrick Mason, and Kelly Gregg.

With free agency presuming sometime this week, teams are going for the gold. The New York Daily News is reporting that the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins are poised to aggressively pursue free agent wide receiver Santonio Holmes whenever the free agency period begins.

After serving a four-game suspension in 2010 for a violation of the NFL’s drug policy, Holmes caught 52 passes for 746 yards and six touchdowns as the Jets made a deep run into the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

For the Jets, signing Holmes to a big contract makes sense. He knows the offense, he knows the coaches, and he has shown that he and Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez have big-play chemistry. The Jets rightly consider themselves Super Bowl contenders, and signing Holmes would give them a potent alternative to a solid running game.

The Washington Redskins, on the other hand, were a very bad team in 2010. In fact, their 6-10 record is actually misleading: they were not nearly as good as their record indicated. According to the Quality Stats used by Cold, Hard Football Facts, they were straight up terrible. Consider the following stats:

The Redskins ranked 29th in CHFF’s Scoreability Index (17.79 Yards Per Point Scored), which measures how efficiently teams score points.

• Ranked 27th in the Offensive Hog Index, which measures offensive line performance
• Ranked 26th in the Defensive Hog Index, which measures defensive line performance
• Ranked 24th in Defensive Passer Rating, which measures the performance of opposing quarterbacks
• Ranked 26th in Passer Rating Differential, which compares the team’s quarterback performance with opposing team’s quarterback performance

It’ll be interesting to see which team goes for this guy. Either way, with Reggie Bush being a free agent, talks of Eagles picking up Favre as backup, and the Ravens releasing Mcgahee and the vets, football fans can expect alot of changes before the season begins.
