While many draftees and first time college hoopers are tearing up their cities at local Pro Ams, Duke’s Nolan Smith is trying his talents at coaching. Smith just finished a solid 4 years at Duke University under the phenomenal coaching of Coack K and was picked up in the first round by the Portland Trailblazers.
Smith was coaching in the D.C. Assault AAU game in Pheonix where he managed to get ejected. Note that Smith has never been ejected from a game that he’s played in.
Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com talked to Smith about the ejection.
“Coaching and playing is totally different. I was frustrated with the team not playing hard and not playing with energy. I knew my team would respond in the right way.Refs were missing some obvious calls. And my kids needed some fire in them.”
“We were down 19 when I did it, and we came back and lost by 2.”
Spoken from the words of a true coach. Sure Smith has taken some chapters out of Coach K’s book, knowing a technical from the coach can sometimes get the team fired up. I’m expecting good things from Smith once the season takes place and would like to see him take a coaching position down the line, far down the line.
